THE HARD PART ABOUT SELLING AVON

When you are researching AVON, and interested in selling, you are probably going to come across a few sites that seem like it is almost too good to be true to be able to make money with the company. You may even find a few reviews that bash Avon for being a “SCAM” because people will invest in the business, realize they aren’t making millions and millions of dollars right off the bat, and quit. So, as an Avon rep, I am here to tell you the HARD part about Avon, and cover the numerous complaints that people use when they QUIT SELLING.

1) IS AVON A GET RICH QUICK SCHEME?

So many new reps get so excited when they start their business. They pass out brochures to people, collect a few orders, then rinse and repeat. Some reps will pass out brochures to close friends or family members. A few may branch out and pass brochures to places they go on a regular basis. Normally after 2 or 3 months, yes, I said MONTHS, the Avon rep realizes they aren’t making tons of money…but WHY? 
Here’s the thing:
  • It can take up to 2-5 YEARS before you start to see your Avon business expand. 
  • You have to step out of your comfort zone ALL THE TIME if you want to be successful
  • YOU CAN make money quickly but you have to WORK HARD to get there. 
  • Selling Avon as a “HOBBY” is only going to earn you “HOBBY” income

SOLUTION: If you are looking to build your Avon business up quickly, you have to WORK IT everyday. Have books with you EVERYDAY. Pass them out to at least 3 people you have never met before EVERYDAY. If you quit within a few months because you say, “Oh…I never made money with that AVON thing.” Let me ask you….How much time did you really spend building your business to make money? 

2) ARE SUPPLIES A LOT TO INVEST IN?

When people begin selling, they have to invest in the brochures. This means each campaign that they have to order a certain number of books in order to continue their business. Some reps will invest in demos and supplies in order to boost their sales more. However, you will notice that some EX-reps will say things like, “I never made any money because I was always having to buy supplies.”
  • If you were to open an ACTUAL STORE, would you not need supplies to make it functional? 
  • You DO NOT HAVE TO invest in SAMPLES, DEMOS, or even INVENTORY to grow your sales. ALL you need is the brochure with your information on it.
  • Brochures are inexpensive. You can get a pack of 10 brochures for $6.00. They get cheaper as you buy more. SO if you order 100 brochures they cost about $21.00. Believe me, $21.00 is NOTHING compared to some other direct sales companies and their supplies. PLUS the more you sell, the more your commission will cover the cost of books. 
  • IT IS POSSIBLE to purchase supplies AND make a PROFIT, but you have to BUDGET correctly.

3) IS AVON A SATURATED MARKET TO SELL IN? IN OTHER WORDS, ARE THERE TONS OF REPS SELLING IT?

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard someone say, “I can’t sell Avon because everyone I know sells it.”

Really? EVERYONE you know? You don’t know if you really can’t sell Avon unless you TRY. Think of this. Some Avon Representatives only sell for the discounts and to buy presents for family and friends. Others just enjoy selling it on the side rather than building a full blown business out of it. EVERYTIME I come across someone I have never met before, 80% of the time I get this response, “Oh my gosh! It has been so long since I have seen an Avon brochure, may I have one?” or the ever popular, “I used to buy Avon a lot, but the rep I had bought from quit. I have been needing some new makeup!”

Chances are you are most likely going to run into more customers that either say they used to buy Avon or they haven’t seen an Avon brochure in a while. Even if you do get those that say they already have a rep, give them your information anyway. You never know because their current rep may quit and they will need someone NEW to buy from. Good thing they got your business card right?

4) HOW MUCH WORK IS NEEDED TO START GETTING THE MONEY I AM LOOKING TO MAKE?


Well, that all depends on how much work you are WILLING to put into the business. Now, granted if you have a full-time job and 2 kids, and are busy all the time, then I can understand how it can be a littler harder to fit your Avon business into your schedule, BUT you can still MAKE time. Spend at least an hour everyday working your business. If you can, spend a little more. It may take longer to see the fruits of your labor flourish, but in the end, would you rather be working that 9-5 job and counting the days until the weekend is here, OR would you rather be working your AVON business on your OWN time and taking time off when YOU need it.

Now if you are one of those people who have extra time on their hands, I sure do ENVY you! That means you have even MORE time to build your business up. Do different things everyday when you are building your business. Plan a day to toss brochures (See my other post about how to toss), schedule a time to do events, (see my post about events here.) or even tailgate (see my post about tailgating here.). You have the tools to work it, YOU just have to make it HAPPEN!

5) WHAT HAPPENS IF AVON RUNS OUT OF STOCK OF SOMETHING A CUSTOMER ORDERS OR THE PRODUCTS GET DAMAGED DURING DELIVERY? 

Let me be real with you. YES you will have this happen. Is it a good idea to BLAME AVON for not doing everything right by you 100% of the time? NO! In any business, shortages WILL happen. Since Avon is such a popular company, sometimes you won’t always get what you order. As a business owner, you also have to be a problem solver. So Avon does not have the product this time, big deal. Offer your customer a free gift and let them know their product will arrive during the next campaign. I have RARELY had a customer turn down a FREE gift. Products damaged during delivery? No big deal!

 Just call Avon and let them know the situation. Chances are they will resend your shipment of what was damaged at NO COST TO YOU! You may have to wait a few days, and if that means your customers have to wait, again offer a gift, discount, or money off with their next order and I promise you, your customers will continue to order from you; EVEN if damages or shortages occur!
