GUIDE TO BEING SUCCESSFUL WITH AVON: TAILGATING

TAILGATING!



Tailgating can be an excellent way to build your business, granted it isn’t the ONLY way (see my tools & tips tab) BUT it is perfect for face to face contact, and also for recruiting! Below I have listed a few tips, photos and how to’s for you if you are considering tailgating as one of many ways to build your business!

1) GRAB A PARTNER, TEAM MATE, OR BRING A FRIEND! Tailgating can be so much more fun when you bring a person with you. If both of you are out there waving signs, serving customers, and having a good time, people will want to know what is going on. Make it look like a party, so people will want to crash it! Haha! 🙂


2) PICK A DATE THAT WORKS FOR BOTH OF YOU! The best way is to pick a date (Ours was a Saturday) that fits with you and your friend/teammate’s schedule. Plan for it to be about 2-3 hours of tailgating as you want to be able to spend enough time waving and talking to customers as much as possible. THEN go out and DO IT! Don’t dip out at the last second because you are too scared or worried you won’t get any new customers or leads. You definately won’t if you don’t TRY! This is about stepping out of your comfort zone and making it HAPPEN!

3) PICK A PLACE! Usually an abandoned parking lot is good. Often times if you ask permission you might be able to do it in a business parking lot. Either way, find a place that’s good for you and make it happen!

4) SUPPLIES! Don’t overthink supplies! It really is just getting out there and passing out books and getting customers. If you are constantly worried about how the books look, what they need to say or anything along those lines it will not benefit YOU in the long run. KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!

5) WAVE AND HAVE FUN! The next step is pretty simple! Place your signs out where people can see them or wave your signs. Smile! Be sure to encourage the people driving by that there is AVON available and you are there to serve them! The best way to do that is by offering a friendly environment. Dance if you have to! Attract as much attention as you can but don’t be scared to enjoy yourself! 🙂 

6) STRIKE UP CONVERSATION! When you are out talking to customers that stop by, ask them a few questions to provoke conversation such as:
  1. Do you have an Avon lady in the area?
  2. What are some of your favorite Avon products?
  3. Can I offer you this brochure so you can browse through to find what you might like?
  4. May I get your contact information so that I can let you know what I place my Avon orders?
  5. Are you interested in earning extra money with the Avon opportunity?
  6. When would be a good time to schedule an appointment so we can discuss the Avon opportunity in further detail?
  7. Do you have any friends that might like Avon?
  8. I would love to be your Avon lady, is it alright if I add you to my mailing address so you can receive Avon brochures on a regular basis?
7) HAVE FUN! Tailgating is meant to be fun and help you getting out there and talking to customers you’ve NEVER met before face to face about Avon. Since we have brand recognition on our side it makes it virtually easy to sell Avon. YOU just have to MAKE THE EFFORT!! Money will not fall into your lap, you have to go out there and WORK FOR IT!

Be Absolutely Awesome with Avon’s President’s Recognition Program!

One of the best parts About Selling Avon is the business is completely flexible. Some top sellers get there by having helpers and some get there by building huge customer bases. When you Sell Avon, you can do fundraisers, home parties, sell door-to-door, Sell Avon Online, set up at events, go tossing, and more. One thing is for sure, at a minimum, your goal should be to reach President’s Club. You will make the most money selling Avon when you reach President’s Club or higher each year. The Avon selling cycle now goes from campaign 1 – campaign 26 each year. The sales levels are based on award sales received during the annual cycle.

Avon Sales Levels for 2015

  • Level 1 – President’s Club: $10,000
  • Level 2 – Honor Society: $20,000
  • Level 3 – Rose Circle: $35,000
  • Level 4 – David H. McConnell Club: $65,000
  • Level 5 – President’s Council: $110,000
  • Level 6 – Inner Circle: $220,000

How much Money can you make Selling Avon?

Please see the 2015 Avon Commission Chart below. Avon’s commission chart is based on a “the more you sell, the more you earn” philosophy. Keep in mind that although online sales are not based on an earnings chart, those award sales from your online business can bump you up into the next earnings level for your traditional order. When you Sell Avon, you collect the total amount due from your customer including the product price from the book, sales tax, and customer order charge. When you submit your order to Avon, the company charges you for the cost of the product and for the sales tax you collected. The amount left over after paying Avon is your profit. To Make Good Money Selling Avon, I would recommend setting a goal to sell at the 40% earnings level every campaign. With a total of $500 in orders, that would give you a profit of $200 each campaign to re-invest in your business or to add to your family’s monthly income.

Avon Selling Quick Tips

  1. Wear Avon products. This may be an obvious tip but I didn’t do it myself for about my first year selling. When you try and use the products yourself, it will be easier to relate to customers and answer customer questions. Don’t go overboard on your spending but make it a goal to try something new at least once a month. If you can’t afford the products yourself, use your Avon website to see how customers have reviewed the product.
  2. Buy samples and / or demos. It is hard to sell beauty without having some sort of samples or demos on hand. Customers want to see, feel, and smell products before they buy. Take advantage of sample packs in the What’s New books. Be sure to buy samples of new skincare or fragrance before they debut in the catalog. The more your customers try, the more they will buy.
  3. Try different methods of Selling Avon. There are plenty of ways to Sell Avon and we are all going to get different results based on our personalities and how we present to customers. Keep trying new ways of selling to figure out which methods will add to your success.
  4. Bring Avon Catalogs with you everywhere you go. Carry 3 – 5 with you each day and ask people you run into if they’d like one. You’d be surprised how many people wish they had a good Avon Lady and will welcome the opportunity to take a book.
  5. Invest in catalogs and do your homework. Look ahead at the campaigns to see where the best sales are, which products are new, and what your hot sellers will be for that specific campaign. The more you know about the book, the better you will be able to sell it to your customers. Use little sticky notes to mark pages of good deals, scented pages, or new products.
  6. Communicate with your customer on their terms. Ask your customer how often they would like you to follow up and their preferred method of contact.
  7. Give good customer service. Avon products are great quality. Most complaints I hear about Avon are about the customer’s last representative…how they never delivered their products on time or they couldn’t get in touch with them, or how they stopped selling. There are plenty of customers out there to service…you just need to get your name out there and give great customer service.
  8. Offer free gifts with big purchases or discounts for first-time customers. Use these offers as door openers to build relationships and gain new customers. Make yourself stand out from other Avon Reps.
  9. Do your best to reach President’s Club. How would you like a guaranteed 40% commission on all full earnings items in your orders for a whole year? Well, that’s what you get when you make President’s Club along with other great benefits. Plan out each Avon Campaign, take advantage of double and triple dollar offers, and look for organizations willing to do fundraisers. Do whatever it takes to make President’s Club…you’ll be glad you did.
  10. If you are a shy Avon Representative, use the Avon Catalog as a tool to open the door to conversations with people you encounter. Try saying something like, “How would you like an Avon Brochure?” with a smile on your face. The more you step out of your comfort zone, the braver you will become in uncomfortable situations.

GUIDE TO BEING SUCCESSFUL WITH AVON: TABLE BOOTH EVENTS

EVENTS!!

Step 1: Find an Event

In order to find an existing event try going to Google and searching for events that might be happening in your community. Look for things such as fairs, flea markets, job fairs, craft shows, etc. Facebook also has vendor event groups that many people local to you might be hosting. 

  • Once you find an event call the person in charge of it and see how much it will be to set up a table. If it’s in your budget then go for it.
  • A way to save money is to bring someone from your team or someone you may work with in order to split the cost. But keep in mind this is an investment in your business. So for example instead of spending $20 eating out, invest in your business and put the money toward your event.
  • You may also set up for free in front of your house. This is especially great for those who live on high traffic streets. But you can always promote yourself and the times you’ll be in front of your house by announcing it on social media and hanging fliers around your community. People love a great deal.
  • Approach small business in to see if they will let you set up in or out front of their store. For them to say yes you have to make sure you are doing things to benefit their company. Some ideas are telling them that you will be able to give them names and numbers of their customers, give their customers a free gift if they spend a certain amount in their store, put a flyer about their business in your brochures you hand out. Make sure you make it sound as good the business as possible. Only do this with small businesses not corporate business.

Try looking into Sprint Stores because Avon has an affiliation with them.

Preparing for Your Event

You need to prepare for your event so you know what you will be able to offer potential customers and business partners. Some things you may want to invest in are:

  • Table
  • Table Cloth
  • Folding Chair
  • Appointment Kits (3-5)
  • Sample Packs
  • Labeled Brochures (current and old)
  • Business Cards
  • Signs
  • Inventory
Remember to wear an Avon Shirt, Visor, Apron, and Name Tag so people will know you are official. 
You may also want to invest in free gifts for those who join Avon or for the business you set up at you may give a free gift to people who spend a certain amount in the business.
Another thing a lot of reps do is buy picture frames from the dollar store and print out different signs that say things like “Start your Avon Business today for Just $15” or “Ask Me About Avon Fund-raising” or something along those lines.
You can also get a poster board and write in sharpie “Free Avon” and hang signs at your event or on your car if you’re tailgating.
Sample packs are something you should prepare the night before. They consist of a business card, a coupon that if redeemed can earn them a free gift if they sign up for Avon that day, a fund-raising flyer, and a piece of candy. 
When it comes to inventory make sure you are making a profit on all the things you sell at your table. Mark all of your products with prices so people don’t have to ask you how much they cost. Try to make prices consistent with what’s in the current book. You can also sell all of just one product if you have certain goals to reach. Most reps do a $1 basket, $2 basket, or $5 basket etc. Remember when buying inventory to try and get the best deal, order a lot of the 5 for $10 deals.
If a fancy Avon table cloth is not in your budget that is understandable. Just get one that is reasonably priced, it doesn’t have to say Avon.
Label your brochures before the event. Make sure to put labels on all sample too.
Consider making a basket to raffle off at your event. Make sure the basket is affordable to you but looks expensive and attractive. If you decide to do this make sure to buy a basket to shake up the raffle tickets in and raffle tickets. Prize wheels are excellent for this, you can have customers spin the prize wheel to win free samples or coupons; but in order to participate they have to fill out a contact card to be entered into your free raffle for a gift basket or something.  BE CREATIVE 🙂

Step 3: What to Do At Events

At events you want to make sure you are collecting names and numbers so you can contact potential customers to get orders. You can do this multiple ways:
  • have them fill out raffle tickets
  • have them do a small survey to enter the raffle
  • have a follow up notebook (separate sheet into sections that say name, phone, email)
Make sure you offer people the Avon opportunity. If applicable let them know that if they sign up to start their Avon business today that they will receive a free gift. Tell them about the benefits of starting such as: free website, free training, low shipping costs, low start up fee, no inventory required, and more!
 
Overall make sure you have fun doing events and making money. Don’t worry about getting “no’s” from people just do you best and be excited and alive! Be nice and have a blast.
